Title: Classification in Algebraic Geometry: The Geometry of Moduli Spaces

Abstract:

Classification is, as in other branches of mathematics, a central theme in algebraic geometry. This leads to the construction of moduli spaces. The geometry of these moduli spaces is often very interesting and reflects properties of the objects which are to be classified. In many cases there are more than one way to construct these moduli spaces, e.g. via Hodge or Geometric Invariant Theory. When studying degenerations, one is led to compactifications of the moduli spaces. These typically depend on the approach one takes. Comparing these different constructions can be subtle, but it often reveals interesting geometric phenomena. We will discuss some example, old and new.
