Title: What’s the matter with geometry?  How string theory generalizes general relativity

Abstract: In the standard paradigm of field theory, gauge fields are sourced by matter, and in turn the gauge fields exert forces on matter.  In string theory, this division of labor is blurred – gauge fields can become matter, and matter can become geometry.  After a brief introduction to string theory, I will illustrate this phenomenon with several examples.
