VCAs, Readers, and Tutors

Virtual Course Assistants (150s, remote)

A VCA is primarily responsible for grading theoretical parts of Math 150s homework assignments (about 3 - 5 problems per section) and will be assigned to two sections each. In addition, a VCA is responsible for promptly returning to the Instructor homework assignments from the assigned class. A VCA keeps an accurate record of students' homework grades, uploads them on CANVAS, and regularly meets with Instructors to discuss issues in the course, such as difficulties the students are having with the homework problems, or with understanding concepts.

Applicants for VCA positions should have had Honors Calculus, or Math 159 or Math 15910, or higher-level mathematics courses. VCAs should expect to spend 10 hours per week on the job. Assignments of VCAs are made by the Department and are based on the level of experience of the applicants for each position. Assignments are made for one quarter at a time, but preference will be for a VCA to work all year in the same sections; continuation in the job is contingent upon satisfactory evaluation by the current Instructors. Current level of pay will be $25 per registered student as indicated on the course roster at the end of the 3rd week.

Readers (16100 and higher, remote)

A Reader is primarily responsible for grading homework papers in upper level mathematics courses. We expect prompt, careful work from our Readers. A Reader keeps an accurate record of students' homework grades, uploads them on CANVAS, and regularly meets with Instructors to discuss issues in the course, such as difficulties the students are having with the homework problems, or with understanding concepts.

Applicants for Reader positions should have had the course they are asking to read for, or a higher-level course equivalent. Readers should expect to spend 10 hours per week on the job. Assignments of Readers are made by the Department and are based on the level of experience of the applicants for each position. Assignments are made for one quarter at a time; continuation in the job is contingent upon satisfactory evaluation by the current Instructor. Current level of pay will be $50 per registered student as indicated on the course roster at the end of the 3rd week.

In the academic year 2020-2021, Readers for the new Math 183-184-185 sequence should have had a full Analysis sequence, or higher-level mathematics courses.

Super Reader position (in person)

A Super Reader is paired up and working closely with one of our faculty. Super Reader should expect to spend 10 hours per week on the job. Main responsibilities include collecting, grading and promptly returning to the faculty all written homework assignments from the assigned class, as well as holding a weekly problem session and some informal office hours.

For academic year 2020 - 2021, we are primarily looking for Super Readers to help with Math 160s IBL, and you would be expected to attend TR classes along with a faculty. Your other duties would include grading journals, holding 1-2 office hours weekly (remote), and meet with your faculty on a regular basis. The budgeted figures for Super Readers this year are $500 per quarter plus additional $50 per registered student as indicated on the course roster at the end of the 3rd week. Applicants for Super Reader positions should be third- or fourth-year mathematics majors with an excellent record.
